Government Gears Up Tp Import Gas For Stranded Power Plants

The Government of India is looking forward to import at least 70 to 80 million metric standard cubic metres (MMSCM) of natural gas to generate power from idle gas-based power plants; provided gas is available at affordable rates on long term contract basis. Minister of Power – Piyush Goyal visited Australia in this regard and secured assurances for gas supply at $5 per mmbtu. Obtaining the required gas would resurrect gas based power plants and use 20,000 MW power generation capacity of the stranded gas power plants.
