shares his views with Sandeep Sharma about his company, core competencies, products/solutions offered, manufacturing base, achievements in FY2015-16, major clientele, opportunities available in Smart Cities project, challenges faced by the Electrical industry and the way forward to boost growth of the Power sector. Edited Excerpts...

Tell us about your company, objectives and core competencies?
Brugg Cables is primarily into manufacturing of Power cables & Accessories from medium voltage grade up to extra high voltage grade which is 550KV.We produce the same at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Brugg, Switzerland. We are also into manufacturing business of fibre optic cables, metallic cables, defence cables & systems, sensing cables, special industrial cable & coated transmission products.
Brugg Cables India became a legal entity in 2012. The objective is to mark our local presence and grow Brugg Cables business in India.
Additionally we have partnered with well-known local cable manufacturer KEI for local content.
We have already set our footprint in India with banging jobs from Tata Steel Ltd, Reliance Industries Ltd, TanTransco, PGCIl, DMRC etc. We are approved supplier for other utilities as well, such as MSETCL, Reliance, WBSETCL, UPPTCL, and TNEB to name a few.
Our primary focus in India for cabling projects is 400KV market. However, for power accessories we cater the entire range from 132KV – 400KV.

What's the USP of your products/solutions?

Brugg Cables possesses over 120 years of experience. We are in private ownership with strong industrial interests making sure we have a stable long term perspective. We use state-of-the-art technology with a highly skilled workforce. We emphasize on our own R&D organization and our in-house High Voltage Laboratory.

Could you provide us some insight about your manufacturing base?

As I mentioned earlier, our manufacturing base is in Switzerland. We have local setup in India for Sales of products, execution of turnkey cabling projects & installation of accessories and after sale support to client. 

How was the FY2015-16, in terms of products launched, projects bagged, business generated, and growth achieved in both domestic and international markets?
Last year was exceptionally a great year for us in India particularly with respect to accessories. We made our foot prints already in some of the renowned utilities in India.
In last financial year, we participated in Elecrama-2016. This was the first time that BRUGG have participated in Elecrama & we got an over whelming response .In short in terms of market growth our Indian entity have started off fairly well& we see a bright prospect in India in the coming years .

Who are your major clientele and which are the projects you have been associated with?
As mentioned earlier our major clients are Tata Steel Ltd, Reliance Industries Ltd, Siemens, DMRC, PGCIL, Tantrasco and other state transmission utilities. We are executing turn-key project for Tata Steel Ltd for longest ever 400 kV underground cable line in India i.e. 16.2 km with associated accessories. For reliance, we are supplying and installing an accessories order for approx. 204 nos 220KV comprising both High Voltage Joints & End sealing ends at Hazira and Dahej respectively. With KEI we have jointly executed 220KV project at Delhi Metro Railways Corporation (220KV) & presently working at PGCIL & TANTRANSCO.

What's your take on the initiatives required at the Government level to improve Power Transmission infrastructure in India?
In India the industrialization process is on-going, creating the need for infrastructure development. The space constraints in the cities promote underground cables as a solution. We are very hopeful about the Smart-City-Initiative by GOI where there is expected to be considerable amount of underground cabling project in future.

What can be the size of Cables & Wires market in India?
Cable and wires is huge market consists of almost 28-30% of total electrical equipment market in terms of cost. However, in India our main area of interest is Extra High Voltage cables, accessories and system solutions for power & data transmission and distribution.

What are the challenges being faced by the Electrical industry in India?
Erosion in margins is the primary challenges the industry facing today. We have also witnessed increasing number of players over the past couple of years.
GIS mapping for individual utilities is a must for identification of cable network. Emphasis should be given on Healthy and periodic monitoring of the cable network for every utility thereby to enhance reliability of the system.

What is the way forward for the stakeholders to boost growth of the Power sector?
