Bharatmala project is a centrally-sponsored and funded road and highways project of the Government of India. The project entails an investment of around Rs 535,000 crore. Funding of Rs 209,000 crore is targeted through market borrowings, Rs 106,000 crore through private investments, and Rs 219,000 crore shall be raised through the Central Road Fund (CRF) and tolls. The project aims to link port terminals to the hinterland. As part of this programme, six projects are being taken up which includes the major one being Nagapattinam to Tuticorin (355 km), Madurai- Kollam (62 km), Vellakoil-Erode (71 km), Madurai-Natham (38 km), Madurai -Theni (44 km) and Musiri -Namakkal (44 km).
