Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) is planning to complete the construction of its new line from JLN Stadium to Infopark at Kakkanad in two years. In a stakeholders’ meeting convened to evaluate the progress of preparatory works on the new line under Phase II of the Kochi Metro, KMRL authorities sought the support of public and people’s representatives to complete the project in a time-bound manner.

Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) has invited expression of interest (EoI) for the project to come up in Kakkanad. KMRL is planning to implement the project through public private partnership (PPP) basis on Design Build Finance Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model.

The works on the Kochi Water Metro the first such project in India—has gathered pace with the construction of five more terminals in the city expected to be completed by June this year. Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has already delivered the first of a series of passenger boats for the project to KMRL. The remaining boats are expected to be handed over to KMRL within a few months. KMRL conducted the trial run of the first passenger boat in March first week between Vyttila and Kakkanad terminals. The boat covered the 5km distance within 20 minutes during the trial run. It has been learnt that KMRL will launch the Water Metro service after at least five boats are delivered to the agency from the shipyard.

The country’s first water metro project connecting ten small islands surrounding the port city Kochi will start on a pilot basis in July. Water Metro officials said integrated metro service connecting rail, road and water will be a game changer and it will kick-start growing need to explore inland water bodies in the state.
