SWR has commissioned the doubling of the 15.2-km railway line between Sanvordem-Chandorgoa-Margao in South Goa. Non-interlocking work has been completed at Sanvordem, Chandorgoa and Madgaon. The doubling of the railway track is among the three linear projects in Goa opposed by environmentalists.

Byappanahalli, the third railway terminal in Bengaluru and the first air-conditioned one in the country, is set to open for passenger movement in September, nearly six months after it was completed. The Rs 314 crore station building spread over 4,200sqm will cater to a daily footfall of 50,000.

SWR’s Bengaluru division, along with HNi Enterprises, a private firm, is planning an ocean-themed restaurant at Yeshwantpur station with an aquarium complex. Yeshwantpur has enough space but it’s still in the planning stage. An SWR official said a 3,735 sqft area at Yeshwantpur has been allotted to the firm.

SWR has taken up an electrification project which would facilitate introduction of an electric train to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) halt station. The work is going on and likely to be completed by February next year.

SWR is implementing a pilot project to enhance the quality of the communication network linking controllers and station masters, paving the way for greater safety. The pilot project is being implemented in three railway divisions across India, and Mysuru is the first to commission it.

Hubballi railway station, the headquarters of South Western Railway (SWR), will have the world’s longest railway platform by 2021. At present, Hubballi has five platforms, and the number will be increased to eight. Platform No. 1 will be extended from 550m to 1,400m with 10m width.

Shivamogga-Shikaripura-Ranebennur railway line is proposed to be constructed. The state government would release Rs 750 crore as its share. The land acquisition is on. The work is likely to start by 2020 and take three years to complete.

RITES is preparing detailed project report for revamping suburban rail system for Bengaluru covering 161-km. The report is likely to be ready by December.

Plans to undertake the construction of the satellite railway terminal for Mysuru is delayed to land issues. Around 370 acre of land is required for the project.
