Bhedabahal ultra mega power project (UMPP) with 4000 MW capacity is structured to be developed through two SPVs — Odisha Integrated Power Ltd (OIPL) and Odisha Infra Power Ltd, both being subsidiaries of PFC, the nodal agency for implementation of UMPPs in the country.

The average demand for Power in Odisha ranges between 3,300 MW to 4,100 MW. The state is struggling to meet the soaring demand and is able to manage to procure 2,700 MW at the mostfrom various sources.

PFC is the nodal agency for implementing UMPP. The company is in the process of selecting the developer through international competitive bidding for three coal blocks that have been allotted to it for 4,000 MW Ultra Mega Power Project in Odisha. These coal blocks include Meenakshi, Meenakshi-B and Dipside of Meenakshi have an estimated collective geological reserves (GR) of 885.24 million tonne (MT)

The ministry is considering a site in Bihar for setting up a 4,000 MW ultra mega power project (UMPP). The power ministry has also approached coal ministry for allocation of a nearest coal block for the mega project. Land has been identified and water source is also in place. If this site is finalised, this would be the first load centre project as coal will be made available from a nearby coal block through road or railways. Power Finance Corporation is the nodal agency for UMPPs.

The company has recently commissioned third unit with 660 MW unit of the 3,960 MW (6x660 MW) Sasan Ultra Mega Power Plant (UMPP) being developed by SPV-Sasan Power Ltd. Balance three units of this project are in advanced stages of construction. The commissioning is targeted over the next couple of months.

Reliance Power ultra mega power project with 4,000 MW capacity in Tilaiya got approval from the Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI) recently.

Reliance Power has achieved the boiler light up for it's third 660 MW unit at the 3,960 MW Sasan Ultra Mega Power Plant. The first 660 MW unit was commissioned in March 2013, while the second unit was synchronized to the grid in December 2013.
