MBMC will soon induct 117 vehicles to set up its self-owned garbage disposal fleet in Uttan. Two years ago, the government had allotted Rs. 42 crore for the MBMC to upgrade its waste management mechanism, but a major part of the funds is yet to be released.

In a major boost to the Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment project, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has cleared a proposal to swap land with Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust, which is undertaking the project. BMC will hand over 24 plots within the redevelopment zone and will get two plots in return in Bhuleshwar and Mandi in South Mumbai.

BMC has cleared the proposal of building a skywalk bridge which would join Borivali Station (East) to the Omkareshwar Temple, the site of proposed metro railway station at Western Express Highway. The tendering process of the skywalk was initiated in 2019, but due to the pandemic outbreak, the project was stalled.

BMC plans to set up continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations at five places in the city - Chembur, Deonar, Ghatkopar, Kandivali and Byculla Zoo. The stations will also have displays showing air quality index (AQI) and weather information. The BMC has invited tenders for the project costing about Rs. 10 crore.

BMC is set to expand the existing Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Municipal General Hospital (Centenary Hospital), Kandivli (West), to an adjoining plot and an environment clearance certificate has been procured by the civic body to start the construction work.

A new under-bridge near the existing Habibganj underpass will be ready before the monsoon. Bhopal railway division in association with the Bhopal Municipal Corporation is constructing the under-bridge to ensure smooth flow of traffic. The initiative was taken by the Bhopal railway division last year.

BMC has started tunnel boring work for the Mumbai Coastal Road project. The slurry-based Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), said to be the largest tunnel boring machine deployed in India yet, will be used for tunnelling a 3.45-km-long twin undersea tunnel from Priyadarshini Park at Malabar Hill to Girgaum Chowpatty.

To ensure proper management of wet waste, BMC is setting up a micro composting centre near Jharpada in the city. BMC plans to complete construction of 32 MCCs out of the proposed 43 by end of December. These centres can process up to five tonnes of wet waste a day.

The BMC has told the Supreme Court it needs additional reclamation of six hectares for the Coastal Road project in Mumbai. It has filed a fresh affidavit seeking 15 more hectares from the sea. The civic body has so far reclaimed 52.35 hectare for the 9.98-km coastal road from Princess Street Flyover to Worli.
