BMC plans new flyover above Goregaon Creek

To decongest the primary arterial roads including the Western Express Highway and New Link Road, and increase connectivity in areas of Oshiwara, Jogeshwari, and Andheri East, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a vehicular bridge over the Goregaon Creek, from the Bhagat Singh Nagar slums near New Link Road in Goregaon. This is the third big-ticket flyover proposed this year by the civic body, including the ones at Senapati Bapat Road and Mahim to connect the area with the proposed coastal road at Bandra Worli Sea Link, and a new flyover at JVPD in Andheri. BMC’s plan to decongest New Link Road, and improve connectivity to the suburbs of Oshiwara and Jogeshwari aligns with the inauguration of phase I of the Metro line 2A. A senior civic official associated with this flyover project said, “BMC expects vehicular traffic to reduce along the Link Road due to the new metro line, especially once its phase II is complete. Hence, this is a good time to make a comprehensive plan for decongestion of the Link Road.

BMC to reconstruct Parel TT bridge project

Mumbai In what will be a major inconvenience for commuters on Babasaheb Ambedkar road at Parel TT junction, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to reconstruct the Parel TT flyover. The flyover, which helps to decongest the BA road at the junction, sees heavy traffic snarls at peak hours, sometimes taking a commuter over 10 minutes to travel a mere 100-metre stretch. Recently, the BMC built an elevated road between the Hindamata flyover and the Parel TT bridge to ensure smooth traffic during waterlogged monsoons. However, authorities said that it is a necessary project. The cost of the project is about Rs 16 crore. BMC will retain the pillars of the existing flyover at the junction - which will keep the traffic at the junction free flowing - and demolish the overhead carriageway and ramps. The civic body will construct walls on both landing sides, fill them up with concrete, then re-lay the carriageway.

Centre approves Rs 443 crore for waste management

Mumbai, Thane and Mira-Bhayandar municipal corporations will be able to resolve their solid waste management issues and reclaim land occupied by garbage and dump sites. The Central government approved a Rs 433.74 crore action plan submitted by 28 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to effectively address the issue of urban waste. The Centre had last year announced a plan to make Indian cities garbage-free under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and one of the major objectives under the mission is ‘Lakshya Zero Dumpsite’. This was to remediate 16 crore tonnes of legacy waste dumpsites occupying nearly 15,000 acres of city land parcels. Twenty-eight urban local bodies from Maharashtra had submitted action plans for remediation of dumpsites to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Greater Mumbai tops the list, aiming to address the issue of 2.6 crore metric tonnes of waste to transform its urban landscape by reclaiming approximately 355 acres of land followed by Thane Municipal Corporation handling 8.3 lakh metric tonnes of waste lying in the city’s dumpsite. Mira-Bhayandar plans to dispose of approximately 9 lakh metric tonnes of the waste, reclaiming acres of prime land. “The project will ensure the ecological balance in about 1,532 acres of land,” an official said.
