NBCC (India) has received a work order worth Rs 313.80 crore from Puducherry Smart City Development (PSCDL). The company has been awarded the work of planning, designing, and executing various infrastructure development works.

The Puducherry government signed a power procurement agreement with public sector Neyveli Lignite Corporation for purchase of 100 MW electricity from the Talabira thermal power project of NLC in Odisha to the Union Territory.

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 93 crore last month for execution of Smart City projects in Puducherry. The Chief Minister has written to the Centre to provide an assistance of Rs 2000 crore in addition to the central assistance of Rs 1750 crore in 2022-2023 to make up for the loss of revenue on account of withdrawal of GST compensation from July, reduction of VAT for petrol and diesel in the UT.

The Union government will develop Puducherry port in three phases at a cost of Rs 304.8 crore under the Sagarmala scheme to utilize it as a feeder port for Chennai port. Union minister of ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said Chennai Port Trust and Puducherry Port Department signed a memorandum of understanding in March 2017 with the approval of the Union shipping ministry to utilise port in Puducherry as a feeder port to Chennai port. Sonowal said a special container vessel did a trial run between Chennai port and Puducherry port in February 2018.

The Union government, which picked Puducherry for the Smart City Mission in round three conducted in 2017, has proposed the launching of 105 projects at an estimated 822.64 crore. Three projects at 13.6 crore have been completed. The ministry has issued work orders for 42 projects costing 163.89 crore while tenders have been issued for nine others.

The Central government has approved the construction of a new building for the Puducherry legislative assembly, and agreed to allocate Rs.200 crore during the current fiscal and Rs.100 crore in the next fiscal towards this. The Puducherry assembly currently functions in a building constructed by the French.

The Puducherry government proposes to upgrade the minor port at Uppalam under the Sagarmala scheme. The Port Department of the Puducherry Government had applied for Environmental and CRZ clearance to undertake capital dredging and construction of a barrier between the drainage channel and navigation channel as part of the first phase of work.

The ground-breaking ceremony has been done for the LNG import facility at Karaikal port. The facility is expected to commence commercial operations by the fourth quarter of 2021. It is being built on a 12-hectare site with an initial capacity of 1 MTPA, which can be increased to 6 MTPA in a phased manner.
