Vijayawada metro project completion is targeted by December 2018. The phase-I project is proposed to have a 11-km corridor being divided into two parts, 5 km and 6 km. Around 75 acre of land would be required as per initial estimates for building metro depot and the stations. Centre has so far allocated only Rs 100 crore for the project in the last Budget. The state government has released Rs 300 crore for land acquisition. JICA has agreed to fund 60% of the project estimated cost.

The work has not yet started due to funding issues at the concessionaire end. The completion is targeted by February 2017.
