Projects worth over Rs 10,000 crore are expected to be operational within the 10 smart cities of UP within a few months. Racing to meet the June 2023 deadline to meet the objectives stipulated under the Smart City Mission goals, the state government reviewed the progress being made by the urban development department.

The Centre will provide Rs 48,000 crore financial support for the development of smart cities in the country. As per the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) guidelines, the central government will provide financial support to the extent of Rs 48,000 crore over five years.

A Rs. 9.5 crore-project has been launched in Ludhiana to cover the internal drain (nullah) between ShingarCinema road and Gaughat cremation ground. The Rs. 40 crore project is expected to solve the sewerage problem for the residents of Dharampura, Dhokka Mohalla and surrounding areas.

The Telangana government has released Rs. 100 crore for the Smart City Programme in Karimnagar. As a part of the programme, smart roads have been taken up under package-I, II, III. Colony roads would be taken up with Rs 64 crore by transforming them into smart roads under package-III. About 50 per cent of road works have been completed.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has allocated a budget to install 125 pedestrian signals at various chowks in the city. The proposal was submitted by the electrical department and has been approved. Similarly, under the Smart City project, another 125 chowks will also get new pedestrian signals.

Street hawking and wayside food kiosks will soon get a smart makeover in the Kerala capital, with Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL) setting up smart vending zones. The zones will decongest roads and offer a more hygienic ambience for customers and vendors alike. One such zone at RKV Lane near the Museum is nearing completion.

Under the Smart Cities Mission, a total of 6,452 projects worth Rs. 1,84,998 crore were tendered as of November 12, 2021. Of these, 5,809 projects worth Rs. 1,56,571 crore were issued and 3,131 of the projects worth Rs. 53,175 crore have been completed. The Central government has released Rs. 27,235 crore to states/Union Territories for their Smart Cities.

JSCL has chalked out a project to restore the glory of the old citys heritage trail and to showcase Jammus historical and cultural landscape. The trail, being set up under the project Heritage trail and site beautification, will stretch 5.5 km and cost Rs. 16.56 crore.

MBMC will soon induct 117 vehicles to set up its self-owned garbage disposal fleet in Uttan. Two years ago, the government had allotted Rs. 42 crore for the MBMC to upgrade its waste management mechanism, but a major part of the funds is yet to be released.
