SER is implementing project to make all its 362 stations spread over West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand as eco-smart stations. In the first phase, the railways has started work on 21 stations. So far, the work on Digha and Ranchi stations have progressed well. The project also includes installation of Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for zero discharge of untreated wastewater at all stations in a phased manner to make these stations eco-smart.

The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs has recently approved the construction of a 3rd railway line between Narayangarh in West Bengal & Bhadrak in Odisha of 155 km length.

The railways is undertaking the upgradation work of Santragacchi Railway station as a terminal station. The aim is to de-congest Howrah station. The completion is targeted by March 2019. SAIL has supplied 8,000 tonnes of steel for the project.
