Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to expand the Thoothukudi airport which serves the districts of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli in southern Tamil Nadu. AAI has prepared a master plan envisaging new domestic and international terminal building, 3,000 long runway, new air traffic control tower, hangars for aircraft maintenance, state-of-art communication and navigational facilities, cargo complex for international and domestic cargo, instrument landing system for all-weather landing and advanced security equipment. So far 586 acre of land was acquired and handed over to the AAI, the expansion and upgradation work is likely to be taken up immediately and complete in two years.
