Minister of power, coal, mines and new & renewable energy Piyush Goyal has recently launched the new Energy Conservation Building code (ECBC) 2017. The estimated savings is equivalent to the avoiding annual expenditure of Rs 35,000 crore and 250 million tonne of CO2 reduction. Around 50 per cent reduction in energy consumption is likely to be achieved by 2030 through the adoption of ECBC 2017 for new commercial building construction. ECBC code is jointly developed by the Power Ministry and Bureau Energy Efficiency (BEE), along with technical support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The ECBC 2017 code prescribes the energy performance standards for new commercial buildings to be constructed across India.
