The Government of Maharashtra has decided to appoint MHADA as the nodal agency to undertake redevelopment of Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) chawls in the city of Mumbai. These chawls were constructed by the Britishers in 1920 as a low cost housing project. Bombay high court had issued directives to the state government to fix a deadline on starting the redevelopment project. The project comprises redevelopment of the chawls and rehabilitation of 10,000+ families.
